FREEDOM POEMS GIVE YOUNG ACTORS NEW CREATIVE VOICE

More than 20 talented Hull Truck Youth Theatre members will be bringing poetry and songs to life as part of the city’s Creative Voice Youth Theatre Platform later this month. An Anthology of Freedom will explore emancipation from slavery as part of the Wilberforce 2007 commemorations. Selected poems will be interpreted through theatre and music to an invited audience, on Thursday 21st June, at the Live Arts Space in Ferens Art Gallery. It will be
one of three performances by young people involved in different arts projects from across the city.

Hull Truck Education Assistant Claire Newlove explained: “We have 13 to 18 year-olds who are taking part and we have dramatised a selection of songs and freedom poetry. We devised a 20 minute piece through a series of workshops using different styles of movement, music and rhythm and dance to pull together an expressive piece of work.”

It is the second time that Hull Truck’s Youth Theatre has participated in the city’s Creative Voice project. Last year young actors performed a devised piece of theatre called “Fight Back,” which highlighted anti-bullying.

Hull City Council’s Youth Arts Co-ordinator Ruth Drake said that performances in the Creative Voice Youth Theatre Platform demonstrate the vitality of Hull’s youth arts.

She said: “It is great to have Hull Truck Youth Theatre performing at Creative Voice, showing other young people the great opportunities that are available to them. The whole event is about sharing ideas and drama styles and celebrating each other’s talents.”
