Hull Truck Theatre opens its exciting spring and summer season with a production of the gritty comedy Toast by award-winning Hull-born playwright Richard Bean, whose play Up on Roof was nominated for the 2006 TMA award for Best New Play. His acclaimed play Toast premiered at London’s avant-garde Royal Court Theatre in 1999 to praise from the critics. Eight years on, Hull audiences will have the opportunity to taste a slice of life, mid-shift in a 1970s bakery canteen.
Gareth Tudor Price’s fresh interpretation of Toast boasts a talented cast of seven actors including the familiar faces Martin Barrass (Ladies Day Hull Truck); and Paul Popplewell (Under The Whaleback Hull Truck). They are joined by Hull Truck ‘first timers’ Edward Peel (London’s Burning), Patrick Connolly (Heartbeat) Andrew Whitehead (Coronation Street), Jonathan Hansler (My Family) and Andy Fox (British feature film Cheeky), who has close links with the area.
It seems it’s just another Sunday, and just another shift for the lads. Dezzie’s on a promise, Nellie’s on his last smoke and new student Lance is on another planet! But chargehand Blakey’s got bad news - there’s another three thousand loaves to do and ‘if Bradford sez bek it, we gorra bek it.’ The ovens are cranked up and tensions fly high when a spanner in the works means the factory’s future looks bleak. With bread production under threat, will Nellie and his workmates have to ditch their baker’s whites and contemplate life without their daily dollop of dough?
“It
is a genuine feel good show full of gags but grounded in acute observation”
