Quarmby to build the new home for Hull Truck Theatre
Yorkshire Contractor of the Year, Quarmby Construction Company, has won the prestigious bid to build and fit out the new home for renowned theatre company Hull Truck. The £9.8m contract is to be awarded to Quarmby by Hull Truck Enterprises Ltd., and work is expected to commence on site in late October.
This development, totaling £13.8 million with funding confirmed from Arts Council England, Kingston Upon Hull City Council and European Regional Development Fund, will see the company move from its legendary home in the converted St Stephen's church rooms in Spring Street, where it has produced an innovative and engaging programme of work for the last 23 years, to an inspiring purpose built facility that will comprise a 440 seat main auditorium, together with a 136 seat experimental space.
Joanne Gower, Executive Director at Hull Truck Theatre commented;
"This is an exciting phase in the company's development and a great many people have worked tirelessly to get the project to this stage. The support and commitment of all of the funders will ensure that we achieve an outstanding theatre that the people of Hull can enjoy for generations to come."
Construction of the site is scheduled to take 18 months and it is anticipated that the new theatre will be completed in the Spring of 2008.
"This development will have a major impact on the continuing regeneration of Hull city centre as a vibrant and exciting place to live and work" said Quarmby Construction Managing Director David Jones. We look forward to creating a new state of the art venue for Hull Truck Theatre and the region as a whole.Header Image © Hayes Davidson 2005
