The Literary Department
Hull Truck Theatre is committed to
commissioning and producing new writing. We continuously invest in writers,
discovered by our Artistic team through
unsolicited scripts, literary agents, and through partnerships with organisations
such as the National Student Drama Festival. Our literary developmental process
encompasses aspiring writers
through to senior dramatists; local and national voices.
PlayWrite - it’s
back!
Hull Truck Theatre’s
writing programme PlayWrite, open to all and any budding
playwrights, is back! Now led by Associate Director Nick Lane, PlayWrite
is an eight-week course held
on Wednesday
nights in which new and experienced writers can learn and develop their writing
skills.
There are two groups, for Ages
18-28 and 29+
Applications are now being taken
for the next 18-28 group which will run: March 26th – May 28th, 6pm – 8pm
every Wednesday.
The next 29+ group will run later in 2008 (watch this space online or check
local press
for details).
Applicants must be able to commit to the full eight sessions. Applications
will not be considered otherwise.
Course Overview:
In PlayWrite, participants discover what it is to be a playwright; from
how to write for the stage
to delivering a commission, looking at character, plot, dialogue, form, redrafting,
working with
directors, and everything else in-between. Successful participants will be
introduced to classic
plays by accomplished playwrights and will be invited to watch a Hull Truck
Theatre production
free of charge.
Throughout the eight weeks, participants are encouraged to work towards writing
a full length play.
After a few months of writing the group reforms for a weekend of workshopping
their work, led
by Hull Truck’s Artistic Team. Ultimately, every participant will received
detailed feedback.
How to apply:
Please submit an introductory letter that outlines your
writing experiences
(if any) and why you would like to take part, accompanied by an extract of
your writing.
This could be a stand-alone piece of scriptwork or an extract from a full-length
play,
but examples should be no more than 2 A4 pages, single spaced, font
size 12.
Deadline for PlayWrite 18-28 applications: Friday 29th February.
Successful applicants will be contacted in the week commencing March 10th.

or

PlayWrite courses are free of charge, but successful applicants will be required to pay a registration charge of £10 (18-28) or £20 (29+) payable in full prior to the first session.
Script Submissions
Unsolicited ScriptsPlease Note: Hull Truck Theatre’s distinctive artistic brand and ongoing success is due in part to us rarely producing plays that require more than 6 actors. Please note that unsolicited scripts which require casts of more than 6 actors will be returned without being read. We request that writers look at our artistic programme and use their own discretion whether their work would be suitable for our Theatre. We are only able to provide dramaturgical feedback on work that clearly fulfils this criteria.
If you wish your script to be returned, please remember to include a stamped addressed envelope with the correct postage. Otherwise, your script will be recycled.
