Crown Prince

"The most radical drama he (John Godber) has produced for some time" **** The Guardian

(John Godber's) "funniest and sharpest play for some time...
Sadness, anger, affectionate banter and good deal of unsettling humour"
The Stage

"A moving, humorous reflection of human strength.” Hull Daily Mail

"They say it comes to us all …….. old age that is. You just do not expect it to happen over a two hour period! The cast not only transformed themselves physically but also mentally by a twenty year period.

The prospect of watching a group of elderly people talk about Crown Green Bowls did not bring any realisation of joy to my head as we entered the auditorium. In inimitable Godber style there were undertones which really became the main crux of the text. It was global warming – or more accurately ‘climate change’ - that came out with this play and it was handled very well. Articulated through humour it became apparent of how we tend to have our own views on the subject but are happy to do nothing about it, but sit and discuss it at a high level around the green.

With various mentions of the effects of rising sea levels one wonders whether in 2027 we will have certain parts of the M62 that are under water, London becomes the new ‘South Coast’ and Hastings is now part of France! The advent of ‘on-line’ shopping was dealt with in a great way!

With an able cast of 6 playing 7 characters particular mention must go to Sarah Parks for her portrayal of May Batley and Martin Barrass as Ted who both captured the aging process superbly, the sad part of course was that I saw myself in a few years time in them !

Would I recommend a visit ? Of course I would ! Why? An evening of thought provoking dialogue that had me sat with tears of laughter rolling down my face, and then next moment sat wondering where I will be in 20 years time. John Godber sent us home asking one question – heads or tails."
