Hull Truck Theatre are excited to be kicking off the second half of their 2023 season with Pop Music (Thursday 5 – Saturday 28 October). Prepare to laugh, cry and dance like no one is watching as we roll back the years in this critically acclaimed, nostalgia inducing comedy-drama by Anna Jordan. Directed by Mark Babych, Pop Music will be an uplifting play about living in the moment and finding friendship in the most unexpected of places. Join two 40-something singletons G and Kayla for an evening to remember as they dance the night away to three decades of floor fillers at a mutual friends’ wedding disco. As they relive the highs and lows of their teenage years and share stories of the challenges of adulthood, they soon find they have more in common than just their taste in banging tunes. The character of Kayla will be played by Yorkshire actress Natalie Anderson, known on screen for her much-loved portrayal of Alicia Metcalfe in Emmerdale (ITV) and Stella Davenport in The Royal (ITV). Natalie next features in Boiling Point (BBC) and Fool Me Once (Netflix). She plays Maryanne Borden in action thriller Memory (Black Bear Pictures) opposite Liam Neeson, Guy Pearce and Monica Bellucci. Natalie Anderson, Actor, said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be coming to Hull Truck Theatre to perform in the brilliant Anna Jordan’s Pop Music and to work with Director Mark Babych and our fantastic cast. I’m excited about creating a piece of theatre that will hopefully be an emotional rollercoaster of fun. As Kayla I’m excited to have the opportunity to take on some of our most loved music tracks and weave them into our story, giving our audience a chance to take a trip down memory lane and remember the most pivotal moments from their own lives.” Joining Natalie to play the character of G will be actor David Ahmad, familiar to fans of theatre as playing Matthew Hopkins in The Crucible and Polonius in Hamlet (National Theatre); Amir in The Kite Runner (Playhouse Theatre, West End); Miles Hendon in The Prince & The Pauper and Jago in Jago's Box (New Vic); Harold Etches in The Card (Claybody Theatre); Mr. Bold in The Bolds (Unicorn Theatre).
