Welcoming Back Communities

The Welcome Back community events were held in June in partnership with the Goodwin Trust Two Way Street, the Veterans Hub, the MS Society and Unity in the Community. The bespoke workshops were developed with each individual organisation to ensure they met the needs of each group. HTT’s Creative Learning team provided Zoom workshops for the MS Society over a period of weeks, working on writing, directing, and producing drama. The group got to work with 2 actors to see their short scripts brought to life. Two Way Street and the Veterans Hub took part in our Creative Spark workshops, working with a member of the Creative Learning team to write short scripts and learn more about script writing. They also got to see the scripts they had written performed by actors and had the opportunity to direct or act themselves. Writer Maureen Lennon visited members of Unity in the Community group on their doorsteps to chat to them about the area they lived in. Maureen Lennon used these conversations to create a story, The Survival of HU6, which can be read here.
“We were able provide different levels of interaction, depending on what members were comfortable with, to ensure everyone could take part in some fun and engaging workshops and drama after a long period lockdown. We are excited to continue this work and engage more with community groups in the coming months.” Elisha Holt, Community Relationship Officer at Hull Truck Theatre
“The project “The Survival of HU6” was a very interesting and rewarding exercise for members of the community. Communities are people and one of the strong aspects of the area is how people have reacted to the various lockdowns of the pandemic, they love the social interaction of meeting friends and neighbours and attending local community activities together. People felt they could be honest & open with how they felt and thoroughly enjoyed contributing to the project.” Dennis Woods, Unity in the Community
